Okay, So I just got home from a set and like always I am wired, pumped up, tripping because after being gone for so long my clothes still haven't hit the spin cycle. Sorry that's the randomness of my twisted mind. the event... a Women's History Month Celebration, yes an All Women Poetry Soiree! Now I haven't been hosting long, however with an open mic you can get all types of personality's which will take a crowd of 65 down to 40 within 2 minutes! So as a host I try to be the very best that I can be...meaning before I get the show started I announce the poets hitting the mic, scan the room check out the faces, posture, and body language take a small moment to chat let the artist and listeners know the rules and set up, so that we would avoid all possible complication as the show progresses. Thank God for a discerning spirit because I did not do my normal routine. Yet the show progressed with minimal complications. As an elder in the game I feel when I'm placed in a position of hosting I am to offer encouragement to those wanting to improve and become the best that they can be. So, when you get these open mic'ers that want to randomly say stuff off the top, as a leader for the night I have to make sure that my audience is being feed and not bored to a catatonic state, cause "the last couple of your relationships end disastrously... you forgot to be you." But as an artist, I am inclined to offer you a word that will help you know... "even though this is an open mic, the best part of being an artist is having the ability to feel your audience and see what they need opposed to what you want to say. Poetry is not a "ME" art form. Poetry is the beginning of communication, it's the strategic beats of your ink pens against the tables in conference rooms. It's the head bobs walking down the hall with no music. Words formed into a very clever translation of how-to's and other self helps. Anyone can be a poet with the right encouragement. So as a host when you offer the suggestion "to continue writing until you get comfortable with what you're reading" The response warranted should be something other than " Oh sister, I'm comfortable reading my own handwriting"... Go play in traffic!... is what I wanted to say (Deaun that's for you) but as a professional artist that walks in her purpose as a daily practice, I could only say...
